NMBR9 Board Game First Impressions

NMBR9 is an abstract puzzle game.

This is a brief video overview.

Numbers aren’t worth anything in NMBR 9 unless they’re off the ground floor and looking down from above.

NMBR9 Review

This is a brief overview of the game along with my final summary.

TL:DR Players each have the same tiles in the shape of numbers and they have to place them and the higher up the tile is placed the more points its worth.

Update July 2018

I like games like this. Those where everyone gets the same ‘thing’ and players have to use that ‘thing’ better than everyone else.

Das Labyrinth des Pharao is one I watched but didn’t play myself at Essen 2017. In this, you lay tiles to create a maze around a pyramid. The player scores points for each tile they move and for each treasure they walk by. So here you have to design a decent maze, one tile at a time. Of course, some tiles are removed from the game so you can’t just build the same maze every game

My favourite of these is Karuba. Where you build routes for multiple adventures to get them to temples. You either play the tile next to an existing tile or discard the tile to move a Meeple.

I love this game. It mixes the route building, with difficult movement choices, with the tempo put on by your opponents. Every step closer they get is a step you’re further behind, pick up the pace!

NMBR9 is a very fun game too. Not in the same way as Karuba as it’s purely abstract. But the stacking of the tiles is a fun game to play. Especially when you create a perfect 3rd of 4th layer and score the big points 🙂

Or at least the panic when you look at your opponent’s stack and realise they’re doing much better than you! 🙂

What I like about these games is that it’s a purely level playing field. Best player wins.
