The Goonies: Adventure Card Game First Impressions

I saw The Goonies at the cinema way back when. I never thought I’d get to see a tabletop game released 21 years later…

Here it is in all its Goonie Glory.

You play as a ragtag group of kids from the Goon Docks neighbourhood of Astoria, Oregon. You must join together on a quest to find the treasure of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy. This treasure will help you save your homes from demolition!

Players will need to keep their wits about them and use their unique skills to avoid One-Eyed Willy’s booby traps. Also, players must stay one step ahead of the Fratellis, a family of criminals intent on claiming the treasure for themselves.

My first impressions of The Goonies: Adventure Card Game including a brief overview of gameplay followed by my final summary.

Game Summary

I played this co-op card game just after Outpost Siberia which I played just after Dark Souls: The Card Game. That’s a lot of co-op card games in a short space of time.

Also, I played them in reverse order of how much I like them, ending with this one… This worsened the effect of how little I enjoyed this game.

I don’t feel anything is achieved here or that there is much of a ‘game to play’ as they say.

There are big symbols on the cards that specify the cards as ‘starter cards’. But they slot right next to other symbols on the cards, the symbols you’re matching with the cards in your hand!

So, at the start of the game, I spent a few turns waiting for a specific symbol to come up only to discover it didn’t exist!

The locations are laid out in order of the film which is cool but the Goonies move back and forth between them. I remember The Goonies as a linear film showing an adventure and I don’t remember them doubling back from the end of the film to the middle… odd

Oh well…

I compared it to Clock Patience because it always felt that it was going to go your way or not. I never felt like anything we did could affect that.

This game is by a publisher that made 2 of the 3 games I’ve ever rated a 1 out of 10 and while it’s better than that, it’s barely better than that.
