Kingdom Run First Impressions

Kingdom Run! and keep running while avoiding water and… erm… falling asleep…

Check out this cute dice-rolling racing game where you get to screw over your competitors!

Every hundred years, the King organizes a race between the different clans living in the Kingdom of Ewala. The reward for the winners? The throne! The winner’s clan will rule the country for a whole century!

Kingdom Run Review

My first impressions of Kingdom Run including a brief overview of gameplay followed by my final summary.

TL:DR You roll dice and move to win a race but also pull your opponents, put them to sleep and steal their gold!

Summary

We’re looking at a game where you race against other players controlling a team of multiple competitors. My initial thoughts turn to Thunder Ally.

Here you control a team of racing cars trying to hinder opponents while moving your team forward. You have to balance pushing your leading racers forward and pulling your trailing racers up from the rear.

You have to do the same in Kingdom Run.

The scramble though doesn’t reflect car racing as much. It reminds me of Sakura as you’re pushing and pulling your way to the front.

Kingdom Run Components

The board is ‘modular’. I mean, not by much, but I think it counts. You can change how it’s laid out and it matters. You can spread the lakes out or have a couple of them next to each other. This will change how the game plays.

The components are basic but decent. The chunky tokens are nice and the dice are easy to read. Sometimes you have to pick up multiple tokens so I appreciate them being big and chunky.

The constant push and pull of your people around the board is really fun. You can move into decent positions, making sure you move your team forward as a unit. At the same time, you can drop your opponents off in lakes or put them to sleep… or put them to sleep in a lake 🙂

That’s always good fun!
