Twilight Imperium 4th Edition First Impressions

Twilight Imperium is a game I’ve heard a lot about but never got to play…

Now I have!

This is a (not so brief) video overview.

Twilight Imperium (Fourth Edition) is a game of galactic conquest in which three to six players take on the role of one of seventeen factions vying for galactic domination through military might, political manoeuvring, and economic bargaining. Every faction offers a completely different play experience, from the wormhole-hopping Ghosts of Creuss to the Emirates of Hacan, masters of trade and economics. These seventeen races are offered many paths to victory, but only one may sit upon the throne of Mecatol Rex as the new masters of the galaxy.

Twilight Imperium 4th Edition Review

This is an overview of the game along with my positives and negatives.

TL:DR An action selection game where players control large space fleets on a map trying to score 10 points first.

Update August 2018

So this game has been built up to the point where I had to give it a go. It’s one of those where if I didn’t like it I would probably stay quiet. 🙂

So dudes on a map are not my thing. Space isn’t a theme for me either. I’m also not that bothered about playing a game that lasts more than 2-3 hours… not a lot going for it for me 🙂

But it is good. I mean, I played a Turtle-style race so just defended which is my preference in these games. It’s something I enjoyed more during Scythe and it’s why I’m not a fan of Kemet. I just don’t like having to fight during these longer games.

It’s because I don’t like having a plan disrupted to that degree. I mean, I like the threat that comes from encroaching on another player’s territory more than them taking the space I want in a worker placement game.

It’s just a frustration I don’t like. Spending actions to build a fleet only to see it destroyed on a die roll.

Have I played it since? No. Have I had the opportunity? Yes. But I didn’t go ahead with it.

I enjoyed playing it. The people on the day, the situation, the Turtle race, almost winning, learning a new game, and experiencing this beautiful game made a perfect storm. I don’t want to ruin it.
