Is it a Sleeping Beauty or a Frog Prince?

Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, and many other legendary princesses are celebrating a five-day party. The prince charming’s of the land, who have not been invited, have infiltrated the ball to propose marriage. As an independent princess, you have to avoid marriage proposals and remain single. Avoid the most proposals and become the Rebel Princess!

Rebel Princess: Deluxe Edition Game Overview

Quick Rules Summary

Each player gets a Princess card for the game, giving them a player power.

Players also get a hand of cards in 4 suits each round.

At the start of each round, flip the next Round card. This will show how many cards to pass to adjacent players. The round card may also have a special rule for the round.

Players play tricks. The suit of the lead card is the led sui, players must follow suit if able. Highest card of the led suit wins. Winner of the trick wins the next trick.

After all tricks, count the number of crowns and skulls on tricks they won. A Prince is one proposal and the “8” card in the Pet suit is the Frog Prince and counts as 5 proposals.

If a player wins all of the Princes and the Frog they get -10 proposals for the round.

Shuffle the deck and start a new round.

How do you win?

After five rounds, the player with the fewest proposals wins.

Main Mechanisms

Trick-taking! It is very much a trick-taking game.

USP

You first have the round card that adds a rule each round, but you also have your player power for the Princess you have.

This with the scoring of the crowns and skulls is not unique itself for a trick-taking game, but combined it seems pretty normal.

Theme

I like the theme of these ‘known’ fantasy princess’ avoiding marriage.

Setup

Shuffle 3 decks of cards, pretty sure that’s it.

Components & Artwork

The components are fine and the artwork are OK.

It’s a good style that fits the theme, but it’s not for me. Ii would rather see a more Pixar/Disney/Anime style for this type of game.

Ease of Teaching

If a player understands trick-taking games then the teach is pretty easy. The rest of the information, players powers and round events, are open information.

Positives

A fun twist on trick-taking game.

The Princess options will make every game play differently.

This is combined with the event cards that change round to round, game to game.

The scoring system is tense and you really don’t want to win some tricks.

Negatives

The theme will put some people off even looking at it.

Summary

A very fun trick-taking game, one of my favourites.
