Gameday First Play – Port Royal
A push your luck card game.
It has a Jester in it!
The merchant players in Port Royal, which won the Austrian Game Designers Competition under the title Händler der Karibik, are trying to earn as much as they can out of the Caribbean Sea, but if they set their goals too high, they might take home nothing for the day.
In this game you’re trying to get to 12 points by collecting treasure and recruiting people into your play area. These people give you points and abilities.
You start off with 3 money and money is just the back of the cards which is cool.
You flip over cards in a deck and stop when you want. When you stop you buy a card of those revealed. So if a card costs 5 you pay 5. Then, in turn order everyone else gets to pick a card buy paying its full price and paying 1 to the active player.
But, there are ships. There are different colour ships you can flip over and if you flip over 2 ships on the same colour you crash out so there is the push your luck element. The ships are cool as they give you the big money.
While playing I managed to purchase a nice little combo. I had one guy who gave me 2 gold if at any time it was my turn to pick a card there were 5 or more to pick from which happened a lot.
I had another guy who let me pick two cards per turn which means I could usually take a Ship for money and use that money to recruit someone.
I had a 3rd person who gave me 1 Gold discount on any purchase… I won.
I didn’t get to buy a Jester though 🙁
That’s the main bit of the game, get to 12 points to win.
There is more to it like you can repel certain ships if you have enough swords so you reduce the chance of drawing that second one etc
It’s a good game, one I would like to try again just to see if I got lucky 🙂
