In Blood Rage, each player controls their own Viking clan’s warriors, leader, and ship. Ragnarök has come, and it’s the end of the world! It’s the Vikings’ last chance to go down in a blaze of glory and secure their place in Valhalla at Odin’s side! For a Viking there are many pathways to glory. You can invade and pillage the land for its rewards, crush your opponents in epic battles, fulfil quests, increase your clan’s stats, or even die gloriously either in battle or from Ragnarök, the ultimate inescapable doom.
I mentioned this being Kemet 2.0 and that is the game I’m looking for at the moment. I really like Kemet, but it’s consistent set-up (not including the expansion which I haven’t played) put me off slightly due to a possible lack of re-playability.
This game uses drafting to select your strategy for each round. This includes combat bonuses, increased powers and the help of Mythological creatures of Norse Mythology. Also, the minis look great as you would expect from Cool Mini or Not.
The reason I like Kemet is that the game encourages attacking. You only get points in combat if you’re the aggressor so sitting still and building up your army might look good, but it won’t win you the game.
Blood Rage has a similar yet slightly different approach. If you win in combat you get a bonus as you;d expect. But this being a Viking game, death in combat brings glory. Defeated units are sent to Valhalla which also brings a bonus, only those that avoid the glory of combat will lose out.
Also, it appears you can stick your axe in combat in adjacent regions… As the board is quite small and decreases in size each round you can assume the frequency of combat will increase as the game goes on.
Did I Pledge?
Yes. I’m hoping this game is what I want it to be. If it is then I’ll have a fantastic game that looks great. if not? Well then I;ll have a great looking miniatures game with exclusive figures and a good resale value 🙂
