Game Rewind – February 2016

Posted on by Jesta

A look back at games I played for the first time in February 2016.

The definition of average.

Automobiles

Automobiles First Play

A very fun deck builder that simulates a Grand Prix race quite well for a light deck builder.

You balance the deck between using abilities and moving forward. But you have to keep an eye on how much damage your car is taking.

Nice components, fun game play and a great option for your race based gaming.

Result: I still own it, for now.

Mage Knight Board Game

Mage Night Board Game First Play

A quite complex and long fantasy adventure game.

You craft a character deck that fills with wounds as you move around a board completing missions and killing things.

Result: Very nice game, but I prefer something a bit quicker.

Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King

Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King First Play

Fantastic auction type game where you set the prices of 3 tiles then take turns buying them from each other at the price set. You pay the amount you set to the bank for any tiles you have left and place them, and any you bought, in your own Isle.

You’re crafting your Isle to score points by building it in a Carcassonne style game of matching terrain types.

You score point in 5 different ways that not only are different game to game, but which of the 5 score are different round to round.

Excellent game.

Result: I still have this and I love it.

GIPF

GIPF First Play

Good, but just another abstract for me…

Result: Not a fan.

Spirits of the Rice Paddy

Spirits of the Rice Paddy First Play

A very nice and clever Euro about grow rice in a paddy field. You need to control the flow of water, clean up pests and feed your ducks to use their droppings as fertiliser. Oh, there is also Magic…

Result: Pretty good, I’d play this again

Um Reifenbreite

Um Reifenbreite First Play

An EXCELLENT cycling racing game where you use cards and dice to move, but as you move everyone behinds you drafts along.

It’s very tactical with the drafting. If you move forward and tuck in directly in front of another bike the players behind you can’t draft. But if you stay in a pack you ‘ll get a lot of free movement.

There are different types of terrain, chance cards and other things to make the game better.

I would love to see a reprint, but games like Thunder Ally have it covered. It has a similar drafting mechanism and is just as tactical, maybe more so.

Result: Fantastic game, but lack of availability means I’ll reach for a replacement.

QI the Board Game

QI the Board Game First Play

Fun quiz game based on the TV show.

Result: I’d play if in the right mood with the right people.

Bucket of Doom

Bucket of Doom First Play

Adult game where there is a problem, and you have to use cards in your hand to solve it.The active player votes for the best one.

Result: These games are always fun, if not played too often.

Dead Drop

Dead Drop First Play

Love Letter-ish filler where you’re trying to deduce the value of a hidden card. This is done though various methods of finding out what cards players are holding.

Result: Good, but not Love Letter.

M.U.L.E. The Board Game

M.U.L.E. The Board Game First Play

Very nice economic game based on the computer game.

Some interesting things that aren’t in any other game I have.

Result: Never got around to a second play, in the ‘for sale’ pile.

Greed

Greed First Play

Nice drafting game where you’re trying to play Gangsters and Buildings to make money. You combo symbols to score points and screw over other players.

Result: Good, but 2/3 plays was enough.

Black Fleet

Back Fleet First Play

A very nice game where you control 2 boats. One that sails from port to port picking up and delivering goods to gain money. The other to go around and hunt down the opponents Goods ship to sink it!

You also all have joint custody of the Navel ships…

Nice and fun, and very pretty

Result: I would play this again, in fact, I have since.

Colt Express

Colt Express First Play

Random game where you control someone moving around a train, attacking the other players and collecting treasure. As movement is programmed in secret you’re never too sure who will be where when you attack. Sometimes it means you miss, other times it means someone moves right onto the end of your fist 🙂

Result: I’d play this from time to time.

Cockroach Poker

Cockroach Poker First Play

Give someone a card face down, tell them what it is. They either flip it up and see if you were lying, or pass it one to someone else doing the same thing.

A simple bluffing game.

Result: Wouldn’t want to play it too often.

Signorie

Signorie First Play

I barely remember this game, not a good sign!

Result: Pass
